Our Community Programs
The entire country of Panama has only one public library and it is located in Panama City! That means that most of the rest of the country has little or no access to books whatsoever, except perhaps those who live in the city or attend private schools.
After two years of fundraising, construction is finally complete and the new community library at Finca La Maya was inaugurated in February 2009. Funding is still needed for a scholarship to pay one person to manage and keep the library open to the public. There is ongoing need for better tables, folding chairs and additional shelving for books. The library is located next to the new classroom facility at La Maya, where free English language classes, a childrens’ Art class, and Family Movie night are held.
Family Movie Night at FLM
The closest movie theater is an hour away. Many families cannot afford to pay for the bus ride out and tickets to enter in the normal theater. Last year, FLM started hosting Free Family Movie Night.
On the first Saturday of every month, children, their friends, and their families gather at approximately 5:30 p.m. Movie admission is free and snacks are provided inexpensively.
